Cartapesta is a peculiar product of the handicraft of Salento. It is the result of working with glue and paper, modelling stunning figures and accessories. This art has ancient origins but it is still alive in the “botteghe” – small shops and production places – in the historical centre.

The origin of this handcraft practice is unknown and the common belief is that it started in barbershops. Statues made with this technique are spread all over the area, representing Saints, brought in procession for religious celebrations, religious scenes and nativity scene characters (these can be admired in the Fair of Santa Lucia).

The technique of cartapesta has been successful over the years thanks to its low weight and production costs. However, the modelling process, despite the simple starting products, requires a high level of ability and a lot of experience. Especially, in the modelling process, placing the modelled paper on a special supporting structure made of straw and oakum sustained by and iron cable.
