According to the orthodox tradition, the Virgin never died but she was welcomed in the heavenly kingdom, with body and spirit, while she was sleeping.
This ritual is called “dormizione della Vergine”, literally the slept of the Virgin and it is celebrated from the orthodox culture on 15th August.
The orthodox community celebrate this ritual in Salento as well, in the castle in Acaya, in the municipality of Vernole. The choice of the location is not casual. Indeed, in one of the castle’s room, there is a fresco illustrating the transition of the Virgin to the heavenly kingdom.
