Fishermen are the most devoted to the Virgin of the sea, which is a celebrated during the summer with religious and civil ritual. In July, the village of San Foca, a municipality of Melendugno, on the Adriatic coast, is decorated with the traditional luminarie (decorative structures of wood and lights) to honour the Virgin of the sea.
The most picturesque moment of the celebration is the ceremony on the sea. The statue of the Virgin is placed on a boat, which will drive along the coast, followed from every sort of other boats decorated with lights and garlands.
Il corteo galleggiante è ammirato da un pubblico molto numeroso dalla terraferma e, al suo rientro, si celebra la messa mentre in serata la banda si esibisce in un concerto conclusivo.
