The legend says that Brunese was the daughter of the rain and the wind, born under the full moon, in the area of Melendugno, near to the village of Roca Vecchia. Brunese was a beautiful and wild woman, grown up in harmony with the nature and learned the magical arts.

Her long brunette hair made many men fall in love with her but she was well known in the area for her ability to cure people with natural remedies. Unfortunately, among her suitors, there was a man, that after having being refused several time, decided to seek revenge

For this reason, he reported Brunese, to the Inquisition Court, as a witch. Brunese was sentenced in 1587. Afterwards, Brunese launched damnation on the village of Roca Vecchia and right after an epidemic of malaria spread in the village. Survivors moved in a healthier place, founding the town of Melendugno.
