The legend says that Brunese was the daughter of the rain and the wind, born under the full moon, in the area of Melendugno, near to the village of Roca Vecchia. Brunese was a beautiful and wild woman, grown up in harmony with the nature and learned the magical arts.

Her long brunette hair made many men fall in love with her but she was well known in the area for her ability to cure people with natural remedies. Unfortunately, among her suitors, there was a man, that after having being refused several time, decided to seek revenge

Fu così che il pretendente respinto sparse la voce che la Brunese era una strega. Presto il Tribunale dell’Inquisizione intervenne, processandola nel 1587. La fanciulla rivolse allora una maledizione che presto portò la malaria nel villaggio di Roca Nuova. I sopravvissuti si trasferirono in un luogo più salubre, dando origine al borgo di Melendugno.
