The Cesine Natural Park covers about 600 hectares and it is nationally protected as wetland area. The area is situated in the municipality of Vernole. The Natural Park is managed from WWF and it takes the name, Cesine, from the word “segina” – wild area. The natural park is located on the Adriatic coast, about 10 kilometres far from Lecce, between the villages of San Cataldo and San Foca. The area offers very different landscapes, from countryside to woods, natural lakes, sand and rocks. It was recognised as area of national interest in 1971 and it became National Natural Park in 1980. The woods and the Mediterranean scrub are the main flora within the park. Additionally, it is “home” for many animal species, most of those rare or in danger.
