The coast part of the municipality of Melendugno, has been awarded from Legambiente with “5 vele”, in the list of the most beautiful beaches of Italy for the high level of conservation of the natural environment.
The coastal ecosystem is peculiar and it has been valorised with some interventions, as the recovery of the Brunese stream and the creation of a natural depuration lake. Moreover, the entire coastal area is now under protection as natural area.
The project is to turn the entire area into an Eco-museum, with different interest points dislocated within the municipality. Among these, the most important are the archaeological site of Roca Vecchia, the mediaeval village of Roca Nuova, Grotta della Poesia (Poesia cave) and the cave of San Cristoforo.
