“Trozzula” is a wood handcraft with very ancient origin. It is commonly known as “raganella” (frog) because it produces the same call of it.
“Trozzula” is realised with very simple materials. On a wood stick is attached a piece of wood, with a tab. This wood piece, rotating was touching a gear wheel, producing the special sound.
This object was largely used from children as a game. However, it was as well used on the Good Friday to announce the service, since bells could not be rang. In Lecce, during the San Lazzaro fair, similar objects were sold, but the sound was produced through pebbles closed in a cylindrical cartoon.

Ha origini antichissime, la raganella, piccolo manufatto di legno in grado di sprigionare un suono simile al verso della rana. A Lecce era comunemente chiamata “trozzula”.
Realizzata con materiali semplici, si componeva di un bastoncino su cui era innestato un pezzo di legno dotato di una linguetta che, ruotando, urtava ripetutamente una ruota dentata e produceva il caratteristico rumore.
Un gioco “povero” molto amato dai bambini, ma anche uno strumento utilizzato il Venerdì Santo per annunciare le funzioni religiose quando non si potevano suonare le campane. Durante la fiera di San Lazzaro, a Lecce si vendevano anche i “tetè”, simili alla “trozzula”, nei quali però il suono era dato da sassolini sigillati in un cilindro di cartone.
