The Poesia cave (grotta della Poesia) is situated on the Adriatic coast, within the municipality of Melendugno. This cave is a stunning and magical place on which many legends are told.
The best known legend tells the story of a princess, who used to go swimming everyday just next to this cave, not to be seen from others. However, not much later, the habit of the princess became known in the area and poets started to go in proximity of this site, hoping to glimpse the beautiful princess. The poets were writing graceful poems in honour of the princess.
From this habit originates the name Grotta della Poesia. However, another believe is that the word “poesia” originates from “posia”, an ancient Greek word used in medieval times to indicate the presence of a freshwater spring.
