The Poesia cave (grotta della Poesia) is situated on the Adriatic coast, within the municipality of Melendugno. This cave is a stunning and magical place on which many legends are told.
The best known legend tells the story of a princess, who used to go swimming everyday just next to this cave, not to be seen from others. However, not much later, the habit of the princess became known in the area and poets started to go in proximity of this site, hoping to glimpse the beautiful princess. The poets were writing graceful poems in honour of the princess.
From this habit originates the name Grotta della Poesia. However, another believe is that the word “poesia” originates from “posia”, an ancient Greek word used in medieval times to indicate the presence of a freshwater spring.

La splendida Grotta della Poesia, sulla costa adriatica del Salento che rientra nel territorio di Melendugno, è un luogo magico su cui aleggiano diverse leggende.
La più nota è quella secondo cui una splendida principessa aveva l’abitudine di andare a fare il bagno vicino alla grotta, al riparo da sguardi indiscreti. Presto, però, il segreto della fanciulla si venne a sapere e molti poeti si recavano in questa zona sperando di scorgere la ragazza. Componevano, per questo, leggiadri versi in suo onore.
Da qui, forse, deriverebbe l’appellativo di Grotta della Poesia, sebbene in molti sostengano che il riferimento sia piuttosto al termine “posia”, un termine greco in uso nel medioevo per indicare la presenza di una sorgente di acqua dolce vicino a Roca Vecchia.
