Lu riu is the Tuesday after the Easter Sunday, and it is traditionally celebrated in Lecce as a day to be spent with families and friend in the nature.
In the beginning of the spring, with warm climate, Lu riu is a good excuse to spend one day outdoor. The origin of this tradition comes from the devotion to the Madonna di Loreto, with a pilgrimage to the church of Santa Maria d’Aurio

Con le prime temperature miti, un giorno in più da trascorrere all’aria aperta non può che far piacere a tutti. Alle origini di questa tradizione secolare, c’è l’antica devozione dei cittadini per la Madonna di Loreto, che animava il pellegrinaggio presso l’antica chiesa di Santa Maria d’Aurio.
La campagna salentina al confine tra Lecce e Surbo fa da cornice alla chiesetta medievale dove in mattinata si celebra la messa, seguita da un allegro momento conviviale con una scampagnata nel verde a base di prelibatezze di stagione.
Negli ultimi anni, in occasione de Lu Riu, il Comune di Lecce organizza una giornata all’aria aperta nel Parco di Rauccio. Concerti, escursioni e degustazioni sono gli ingredienti della manifestazione, sempre più partecipata.
