Lu Paulinu is the symbol of carnival in San Cesario. The origin of this singular character is not clear but he is well know in the popular tradition in Salento and especially in San Cesario.

To mark the end of the carnival, after the parades, the dances and the masks, it is celebrated the death of “lu Paulinu”. This is a metaphor to mark the change from the happiness of carnival to the Lent period.

All the citizens participate to this event, wearing their carnival masks and walking behind the coffin of “lu Paulinu”, where a doll representing him is carried. The ceremony is organised from the association FolleMente, in collaboration with the municipality of San Cesario.
