Si dice che la Brunese fosse figlia del vento e della pioggia, nata nel territorio dell’odierna Melendugno sotto il segno della luna piena. Creatura '''bellissima''' e selvatica in armonia con la natura, apprese le '''arti magiche''' e imparò a praticarle.

I suoi '''lunghi capelli''' bruni fecero innamorare molti uomini, ma lei era conosciuta soprattutto per le sue capacità di guarire le malattie con rimedi naturali. Tra i pretendenti c’era un '''signorotto''' locale che, più volte rifiutato, decise di vendicarsi.

Fu così che il pretendente respinto sparse la voce che la Brunese era una '''strega'''. Presto il Tribunale dell’Inquisizione intervenne, processandola nel 1587. La fanciulla rivolse allora una maledizione che presto portò la malaria nel villaggio di Roca Nuova. I '''sopravvissuti''' si trasferirono in un luogo più salubre, dando origine al borgo di Melendugno.
