A Lecce si dice che il '''santo patrono''' si occupi anche di '''politica'''. Si racconta infatti che nel 1799, durante la '''Rivoluzione Francese''', in città si diffusero rapidamente le nuove idee e a piedi della colonna di Sant’Oronzo fu eretto il simbolico albero della rivoluzione.

Il santo stava a guardare dall’alto della '''colonna''', ma a quanto pare non condivideva affatto i fermenti che animavano la sua Lecce. Per dar segno del suo disappunto, la statua di bronzo girò il viso dalla parte opposta e portò avanti la gamba come per '''minacciare di andarsene'''.

La notizia si diffuse rapidamente in tutta la città e i leccesi, per riparare al danno, bruciarono le coccarde francesi e portarono in '''processione''' la statua di Sant’Oronzo custodita nella Cattedrale. Il santo, allora, riprese la sua consueta posizione sulla colonna e tutti ne furono rasserenati.
