Una pietra piatta e levigata era uno strumento indispensabile per giocare e diventava tutt’uno con la mano degli abili giocatori. Quando a Lecce ci si sfidava nel gioco della staccia, le '''pietre''' erano protagoniste assolute.

Una pietra lanciata lontano rappresentava il punto al quale tutti i giocatori dovevano cercare di avvicinarsi. Chi riusciva a totalizzare un punteggio più alto, con il maggior numero di lanci vicino alla pietra, era eletto vincitore dagli altri sfidanti che potevano essere dei '''bambini''' ma non di rado anche degli '''adulti'''.

Tante erano le '''tecniche''' sviluppate dai giocatori per effettuare lanci sempre più precisi e tante anche le varianti che, modificando a piacimento le '''regole del gioco''', permettevano di puntare più sull’abilità manuale o sull’intuito per raggiungere la vittoria.
