The devotion to the Virgin has ancient origin. The symbol of this cult is the sanctuary of Maria Santissima delle Grazie, in Roca Vecchia.
In May, to honour the Virgin and to thank her for the compassion, people use to go in pilgrimage from the town to the sanctuary, situated in Roca Vecchia, next to the sea. The pilgrimage starts in the early morning and it slowly moves towards the sanctuary, singing and praying. Once this group of devotees arrives, a service is celebrated.
During the day, a marching band show takes place and the celebration is concluded with a fireworks show and a concert. The following day, the luminarie (decorative structures of wood and lights) and the stands, selling every kind of goods, colour the historical centre of Melendugno and, in the evening, the final marching band show takes place.
